The Charlie Bear I Wish I Had Kept: My Bohdan Story

As a Charlie Bears stockist, I have a unique privilege that most collectors don't.

I get to see a lot of Charlie Bears in person.

Every year, dozens of beautiful bears arrive at Plush Teddies. I open the boxes, fluff their fur, study their expressions, and get to experience something that's difficult to capture through stock photos alone.

That's why we're so passionate about providing real-life photos, videos, blog posts, and personalized bear videos for our customers. We know that seeing a bear from every angle can make all the difference when you're deciding whether it's the right one for your collection.

And that's exactly what happened with a Charlie Bear named Bohdan.

The One That Got Away

Over time, I received several Bohdan bears.

What fascinated me about Bohdan was how unique each one seemed to be.

Some had a distinctly masculine look, while others felt softer and more feminine. Their facial expressions, eye placement, and overall personality varied more than I expected.

Then one day, a particularly beautiful Bohdan arrived.

She had the sweetest expression.

There was something elegant and gentle about her. I remember thinking she would be the perfect bear to sit on a sofa or reading chair—a bear that instantly made a room feel cosy, welcoming, and complete.

I seriously considered keeping her.

But I didn't.

Like many collectors, I told myself I'd have another opportunity later.

I was wrong.

Watching Her Leave

Eventually, that Bohdan found a home with one of our customers.

I carefully packaged her up and sent her on her way.

As I watched her leave, I had a small feeling of regret, but I assumed another Bohdan would eventually come along that I loved just as much.

Unfortunately, that never happened.

The bear I connected with most was gone.

And once a Charlie Bear is retired and no longer available through retailers, finding that exact bear again becomes much more difficult.

The Challenge of the Secondary Market

Today, if I wanted another Bohdan, I'd need to search the secondary market.

Many collectors successfully purchase retired bears this way and have wonderful experiences. However, buying second-hand can come with uncertainties.

You may not know exactly how a bear has been stored. Sometimes tags are missing. Occasionally collectors report receiving bears with odours from storage, smoke, pets, or other environmental factors.

Most transactions go smoothly, but there is always an element of risk.

What makes my situation particularly frustrating is that I had the perfect Bohdan right in my hands and I could have kept her!

I simply chose not to.

Why This Matters for Collectors

One of the most exciting things about Charlie Bears is that they aren't mass-produced forever.

Some Isabelle Collection and even plush bears may have editions of only 200, 250, or 300 pieces worldwide.

Many of the plush collections are produced in limited quantities. Once retailer inventory sells through and the bear retires, finding one can become increasingly difficult.

While Charlie Bears occasionally revisits a design concept, there is never a guarantee that a particular character will return.

In fact, one of the things collectors love most about Charlie Bears is that new characters are introduced every year. The brand is constantly creating fresh personalities and new designs rather than reproducing the same bears indefinitely.

My Advice: Trust Your Collector Instincts

Looking back, I wish I had trusted my instincts.

The moment I saw that Bohdan, I knew there was something special about her.

If you've ever had a similar feeling about a Charlie Bear—if you keep returning to its photo, thinking about it days later, or imagining where it would sit in your home—that feeling is worth paying attention to.

Because sometimes the bear you're hesitating over today becomes the bear you're searching for tomorrow.

And speaking from experience, that search can be much harder than simply bringing it home in the first place.
